Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a water-insoluble copolymer having hydrophilic nature, by reacting a copolymer consisting of carboxylic acid unsaturated ester and acrylic carboxylic acid component units with ammonia or amines.
CONSTITUTION: A copolymer consisting of (A) 30W70mol% of a carboxylic acid unsaturated ester component unit having 2W4C unsaturated alcohol and (B) 70W30 mol% of a 4W8C acrylic carboxylic acid ester component unit is reacted with ammonia or a 1W18C primary or secondary amine under a sufficient pressure to keep the reaction system liquid at 20W250°C, thus changing completely or partially the carboxylic acid unsaturated ester and the acrylic carboxylic acid ester component units into the unsaturated alcohol and the acrylic amide component units respectively.
