Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the versatility of a semiconductor device by forming a controlling electrode photosensitive second semiconductor element between the control semiconductor layer of the first semiconductor element and the second main electrode side semiconductor layer and forming means for reversely biasing the controlling electrode of the second semiconductor element and means for irradiating light to the second semiconductor element. CONSTITUTION:A light thyristor 2 with controlling electrode responds to light to fire a main element 1, and cuts off a branch current to the light thyristor 2 with controlling electrode by the reverse bias controlling electrode at turning-off time. While the light is irradiated from the first light emitting means 3, the main element 1 is conducted regardless of the presence or absence or polarity of the current of a main current branch. There is also provided means 600 for reversely biasing the main element 1 at turning-off time. When a control signal is applied to the first light emitting means 3, the element 1 is conducted. When the signal is applied to the second light emitting means 5 and the third light emitting meant 9, the element 1 is shut off.
