Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate troubles due to stoppage for measurement of dimensions and enable accurate rolling, by using optical scanning heads comprising numerous photoelectric converters and lens to scan a hot-rolled material and detect its end edge.
CONSTITUTION: Optical scanning heads 53, 54, which constitute dimension measuring units 5, 6, comprise light receivers 53b, 54b made of numerous photoelectric converters and lens 53a, 54a facing the receivers. An image is formed on each light receiver by light from a rolled material to identify the end edge of the material by light bits or dark bits. To measure the diameter D of a round billet 1, the units 5, 6 are placed to extend almost perpendicularly to the moving direction of the billet, the fixed head 54 is adjusted to one end of the billet, the movable head 53 is moved and adjusted to the other end of the billet, an optical axis distance of D is set and a number of light bits corresponding to the distance is input in a data processor 7. When the diameter of the round billet 1 deviates from a target value D, the difference between the number of bits corresponding to the value and that corresponding to the diameter of the billet are calculated by the processor 7 to obtain the proper diameter of D and indicate it on a display unit 8 through compensation for a cold state.
