Abstract
PURPOSE:To conduct electrolysis at a low voltage with excellent current efficiency in manufactyre of alkali hydroxide using cation exchange membrane, by burying gas- and liq.-permeable electrode at least in one of the surface of the cation exchange membrane in such a manner that a portion of the electrode may be exposed, and by feeding electric current to the electrode. CONSTITUTION:A gas- and liq.-permeable anode or cathode is buried in at least one surface of a cation exchange membrane contg. fluorine, especially a fluorine- contg. cation exchange membrane having 0.5-2 milli equivalent carboxylic group per 1g by dry resin to a depth having 90-1% thickness of the membrane so as to expose the electrode partly. Pltinum group metals or their alloys are used for the anode, and platinum group metals or their alloys, or graphite, stainless steel are used for the cathode. These electrodes are made by processing powder to 0.01- 1.000mu average pore diameter, 10-90% porosity, 1X10<-5>-1mol/cm<2>.min. cmHg air permeability coefft., or by providing penetrating pores in a net or plate material. Electrolysis using this electrode permits to manufacture caustic alkali with excellent current efficiency, especially caustic alkali of high concn., at a low voltage, and the electrode exhibits improved durability.
