Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the density of a magnetic disk unit by writing previously and repeatedly three kinds of close servo tracks on a servo disk in sequence. CONSTITUTION:On magnetic disk, the 1st servo track 11, the 2nd servo track 12 and the 3rd servo track 13 are written closely and previously in sequence. Signal components from tracks 11, 12 and 13 are denoted as A, B and C, and the total value of read components as ''1''. Those three signals are processed to obtain difference signals A-B, B-C and C-A, which are shown by D1, D2 and D3. Denoting the servo track width as W, the difference signals are uniformly out of phase in head position displacement X in the track-width direction, so that when X is between 0-nW/2, one of the difference signals will be zero. For the purpose, one of difference signal D1-D3 is selected and made zero by controlling a driver. As a result, the servo head stops on one of tracks 11-13 or at one of boundary point of respective tracks and a data track is fixed correspondingly. Consequently, the data track density can be made twice the servo track density.
