Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure temperature with good accuracy without accompanying danger by combining transparent materials of different temperature coefficients while having an equal refractive index in such a manner that the plane of light waves are disturbed in the wavelength regions of different refractive indices. CONSTITUTION:When the particles 3 composed of BK-3 glass are put in a vessel 2 provided with windows 1, 1' for incident and exit lights and liquid toluene 4 is sealed therein, gas 5 remains in the vessel. The optical guides 6, 6' of optical fibers which transmit the transmitted light of the element body formed in this way are provided. Light is passed in these optical guides 6, 6' and the spectra of the light transmitting through the element body are read. Although the refractive index of the BK-3 glass hardly receives the influence of temperature, the toluene 4 changes refractive index considerably and therefore the wavelengths deviate as well. Hence, if the wavelength position of the maximum transmittance is read and is contrasted with the relation with temperature having beforehand been obtained, the temperature may be readily and accurately measured.
