Abstract

PURPOSE:To utilize a byproduct HCl effectively as a chlorine source, by a method wherein HCl in quantity required for neutralization is added to an aqueous caustic alkale solution from an electrolytic cell when an aqueous alkali chloride solution is electrolyzed by means of a diaphragm method or an ion exchange membrane method. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing caustic alkali after electrolysis is neutralized by adding a byproduct HCl to a portion or whole of the aqueous solution and again electrolyzed without supplying it to an evaporator. The neutralized solution need not be purified as in case of a raw salt. Purified alkali chloride from the raw salt or alkali chloride from other sources is added to the solution necessary, and the solution is used for electrolysis. Thus, Cl2 is obtained by using HCl in case when the demand of caustic alkali is less than that of Cl2, and the production of Cl2 and caustic alkali is economically adjusted.
