Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform surface quenching without using a coolant, by treating the surface of a poppet valve material such as quenchable heat-resisting steel or stainless steel to reduce the light reflexibility of the surface and thereafter irradiating the surface with a laser beam of appropriately set energy density.
CONSTITUTION: A poppet valve 6 made of quenchable heat-resisting steel, stainless steel or the like is placed on a work rest 4, which performs scanning at a desired speed while rotating. The surface of the poppet valve 6 is previously treated with a salt bath, gas softening, phosphate coating or the like so that the surface is turned almost black and its reflexibility is reduced. A laser beam generated by a CO2 laser unit 1 is passed through a head 2 so that the laser beam is changed into a laser spot light 3 of desired dimensions. The laser spot light is irradiated upon the end face of the stem of the valve. According to this method, the treated part absorbs sufficient energy of the laser beam, the surface temperature of the part is raised and the treated part is cooled by heat conduction to the interior from the heated part. Therefore, no special coolant is needed.
