CONSTITUTION:Detection material 1 fitted to carriage 6 is provided with light source 2, sensor 3, light source 4 and sensor 5, and element clock plate 9 is arranged in the main scanning direction between them. Read head 7, recording head 8 and detection material 1 are moved in the same direction according to movement of carriage 6, and slit marks 9a of plate 9 are read successively by light source 2 and sensor 3, and clock pulses obtained by this read are used to determine the scanning pitch in the main scanning direction. Then, scanning start and end times for read and recording are determined by start mark 9s and end marks 9e and 9f on the side face of plate 9.
