Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain title polymer suitable for the separation and concn. of various metal ions and for the concn. and purification of fruit juice, milk, etc., by a method wherein a specified hydroxystyrene polymer is reacted with phthalic anhydride and a phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxystyrene polymer having a repeating unit of formula I (wherein m is an integer; n is zero or an integer; D is comonomer) is reacted with phthalic anhydride and a phenol of formula II (wherein R is H, alkyl) in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain title polymer having a repeating unit of formula III (wherein x is zero or an integer less than m). As this polymer has radicals contg. lactone gp. on its side chains, this polymer is characterized in that ring cleavage and ring formation reversibly take place by the pH of the reaction system with which the polymer is contacted, and thereby active transportability to ion is remarkably developed.
