Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve antiabrasion and antiseizure, decrease the rand surface occupancy while restraining the generation of thermal strain at the minimum by a method wherein a salt-bath soft nitriding is conducted upon a bearing of taper rand thrust of low carbon steel.
CONSTITUTION: A taper rand-thrust bearing of a low carbon steel having a taper surface 1, rand surface 2 and oil groove 3 is provided a salt bath soft mitriding treatment at a temperature of the A1 transformation point or below of steel. This treatment can provide a slft mitriding treatment layer which is ready to fit with its mating material by initial abrasion and of which surface hardness and chemical stability are high, as well as minimizing the thermal strain. Consequently, this makes it possible to improve the antiabrasion and the antiseizure surface pressure in the borden lubricating condition to make a length l of the rand surface 2 in the circumference direction shorter to 20% or below of an addition L of lengths of the rand surface 2 and the taper surface 1.
