Abstract

PURPOSE: To clean effectively the contamination of membrane used in a membrane separation method by using a caustic alkali or a mixed solution of a caustic alkali and ethylenediamine tetracetate.
CONSTITUTION: Sewage is purified directly by a membrane separator simply by removing suspended solids of not less than 50 μm sizes, suspected to block membrane mechanically, by stainer, etc., where contaminants adhered to the surface of the membrane are cleansed by an aqua solution containing 0.05 to 1.5 wt%, preferably 0.2 to 1 wt%, a caustic alkali, or a mixed solution containing the equal amounts of a caustic alkali and ethylenediamine tetracetate in a temperature range from 2°C to boiling point. Thus, it is possible to simplify the processes of sewage treatment and medium class water manufacture and thereby to reduce energy cost.
