Abstract
PURPOSE: To isomerize the title hydrocarbon with little side reactions, e.g. disproportionation and hydrogenolysis, by using a highly active catalyst comprising platinum on a mixture of natural zeolite of the chabazite group, which is subjected to ion exchange into the hydrogen type, and alumina.
CONSTITUTION: An 8C alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. ethylbenzene, in the gas phase is isomerized in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst comprising platinum on a mixture of natural zeolite and alumina in hydrogen gas at 200W700°C. The catalyst comprises 0.05W2.0wt% of platinum on a mixture of 100pts.wt. of a zeolite of the hydrogen type, prepared by exchanging at least 50% of alkali (earth) metal ions ion exchangeable in natural zeolite of the chabazite group with hydrogen, and 25W400pts.wt. of alumina.
EFFECT: The product has an isomer compositon very close to the equilibrium one with little by-products.
