Abstract
PURPOSE: To measure the titled concentration of chromium accurately, simply and for a short time including the distribution of the concentration of chromium in the direction of depth, by immersing stainless steel in a solution to result in positive polarization to a superpassive state region, and by measuring a change on standing of current density during the positive polarization.
CONSTITUTION: The current density value of stainless steel materials is measured which has the various concentrations of chromium under a stationary state in a superpassive state region. The stainless steel materials are then immersed in a solution, whose composition and temperature are the same as those of a solution which has been used to measure the current density value of the stainless steel materials under the stationary state. Variations (called I-T curve for short) in a current density value (I) to the time (T) elapsed in the case when the electric potential is immediately set in the superpassive state region are measured. A point in this curve, at which a steady-state current density value resulting from the surface of the stainless steel basic materials appears, is obtained by variations in the inclination of the curve. Thus, the density of chromium is grasped. The concentration of chromium in the direction of depth of stainless steel can also be measured on the basis of the I-T curve.
