Abstract

PURPOSE: To adequately diagnose a connection defect or the like in the starting system of internal combustion engines by detecting the current which flows in the starting system with a detector to compare the detection value with a reference value.
CONSTITUTION: A starting system consists of a mounted battery BA, a relay switch MS, a driving coil SC for driving the switch MS, and a starting motor SM, and an inspection apparatus I is connected to the system. First, an external power source 8 is connected to the battery BA in parallel. Then the current flowing in the starting motor SM is detected by a current detector 1. The detection value is obtained as a fixed waveform by a gate circuit 2 and a timing circuit 3. The peak of the waveform is detected by a peak hold circuit 4, and compared with a reference value by a judgement circuit 6. When the detection value is smaller than the reference value, an abnormality is displayed by a display 7.
