PURPOSE:To exercise extremely-stable and automatic chroma control with high fidelity by extracting a pilot signal from a reproduced video signal including the pilot signal and then by using it as a reference voltage. CONSTITUTION:From video signal VIN, burst level detector BLD detects the level of a color burst signal and this obtained DC voltage is digitized by pilot signal generator PSG, mixed by mixer MIX in the blanking interval of signal VIN, and modulated by modulator MOD before being sent out to video head HD via recording amplifier RA. In reproduction, a pilot signal is extracted from video signal VOUT by pilot signal detector PSD and then converted by DC converter DCC into a DC voltage, which is applied to comparator CP as a reference voltage. Here, a reproduced burst signal level is compared and controlled to equalize it to a recording level, and the frequency component of a chroma signal is equalized simultaneously to the recording level of it.
