Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an activated electrode suitable for water electrolysis, by eluting sacrificial metal contained in a Raney's alloy which is sprayed on the base material of an electroconductive electrode so as to slute the sacrificial metal with alkali or by anodic polarization, then by plating the surface with a metal of low hydrogen overvoltage.
CONSTITUTION: For the skeletal metal of a Raney alloy are used one or more metals selected from the group comprising Ni, Fe, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir etc., and for the sacrificial metal is used Al, Mg, Sn, Si, Zn, Pb etc. The Raney alloy is sprayed to the base material, such as iron, of an electroconductive electrode so as to coat the base material. After coated, the electrode is immersed in an aq. soln. of caustic soda to elute the sacrificial metal, then the sacrificial metal is eluted completely by use of the electrode, from which the sacrificial metal having been eluted, as an anode in order to manufacture an electrode having porous surface. The electrode is plated with the skeletal metal or a metal of a hydrogen overvoltage lower than that of the skeletal metal to form thin coating. Use of the electrode hereby manufactured as an cathode makes it possible to electrolyze water or alkali metal halides at a low hydrogen overvoltage suitable for the hydrolysis which shows a small change in cathode voltage with time.
