Abstract

PURPOSE: Fibers of polyester with low intrinsic viscosity is drawn and heat-set under specific conditions to produce high tenacity rayon-like fibers with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: A polyethylene terephthalate with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.39W 0.6, which has been measured in o-chlorophenol at 25°C, is melt spun and subjected to multi-stage drawing at a total draw ratio of 5.5W7.5 at room temperature to 210°C. At this time, the drawing temperature at the second stage is set higher than that of the first stage drawing, thus forming the objective fiber having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.38W0.55, filament denier of 7W22, tenacity of 4.5W8.5g/d, elongation of 1W5% when 2.25g/d load is applied and dry-heat shrinkage of less than 9% at 150°C.
