Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce longer cracks in ice through shocks given by an icebreaker's bow and effectively break ice, by projecting a support frame in front of the bow and discharging refrigerant from its tip to the ice plate right before breaking for generating thermal stress in the ice.
CONSTITUTION: A refrigerant injector 6, movable vertically and back and forth by means of a hydraulic cylinder 12, is extended from the icebreaker's bow through a support arm 7. Refrigerant 10 such as liquid nitrogen in a storage tank 9 is discharged from the injector 6 through a pump 11 and pipe 8. The ice plate 2 injected with the refrigerant 10 generates local tensile thermal stress due to cooling, which produces much longer cracks than those caused by conventional icebreaking methods when the bow of icebreaker 3 strikes against the ice, thus the icebreaking is very effective.
