Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce 1,2-polybutadiene by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in a polymn. solvent in the presence of a specified catalyst employing dialkylaluminum halide.
CONSTITUTION: To a 1,3-butadiene-containing polymn. solvent, such as benzene or methylene chloride, are added 0.05W100 millimoles of sol. Co cpd. (e.g. β- diketone complex of Co, β-keto ester complex of Co, etc.) per 100ml of of said polymn, solvent and 0.3W2moles of dialkylaluminum halide of formula AlR2X (wherein R is 2W8C alkyl; X is halogen) per mole of said Co cpd. The mixt, is aged at a temp. of 10W50°C for at least 30sec. to obtain a solution with which CS2 is then mixed to obtain a catalyst. Then the catalyst is added to the polymn. solvent contg. 1,3-butadiene. Polymn. is carried out at a temp. of -30°CW+60°C to obtain 1,2-polybutadiene having syndiotactic 1,2-structure content of not less than 70% and a m.p. of 190°C or higher.
