Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce 1,2-polybutadiene having a high m.p. by polymerizing 1,3- butadiene with the aid of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is employed which consists of (A) a cobalt compound such as cobalt octoate, (B) an organolithium compound such as ethyllithium and (C) at least one member selected from the group consisting of carbon disulfide, phenyl isocyanate and a sulfur halide (the molar ratio among components, A:B: C≈1:1W10:0.5W50). To 100g of 1,3-butadiene is added about 0.01mmol (calculated as cobalt compound) of said catalyst, and the mixture is solution-polymerized at about -20W100°C. The 1,2-polybutadiene produced is a syndiotactic polymer, m.p. about 180W220°C, and can be used in the production of plastics, films, fibers and fillers.
