Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a polybutadiene with a high 1,2-bond content, having a high modulus and improved heat insulating properties, by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a specific catalyst continuously or stepwise at different temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: 1,3-butadiene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst, prepared by incorporating (A) a complex of a cobalt salt and an electron donative phosphorus compound of formula CoX2L2 (X is acid residue; L is electron donative phosphorus compound having an aryl group) with (B) an organoaluminum compound of formula AlR3 (R is alkyl or aryl group), e.g. trimethylaluminum, etc. and (C) 0.25W1.5 moles per mole of component (B) of water, in a (halogenated) hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. n-pentane, etc. while changing the polymerization temperature continuously or stewise to form 1,2-polybutadiene. The temperature difference between the early and later stages of polymerization is preferably 10W 70°C.
