Abstract

PURPOSE: To control effectively for a long time the polymerization of an aromatic vinyl compound at high temperature, by using a small amount of 4, 4'-dihydroxyphenyldiphenylsulfide or its derivative having a high-temperature stability and being handled easily.
CONSTITUTION: The polymerization of an easily polymerizable aromatic vinyl compound (e.g., styrene) is controlled by using 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulfide or its derivative [e.g., a compound wherein R1 and R1' are H; R2, R4, R2', and R4' are H; R3 and R3' are C(CH3)3] shown by the formula (R1WR4 and R1'WR4' are H or alkyl). Controlling more extremely the polymerization in high-temperature conditions such as in distillation, it suppresses the polymerization in production, transportation, and storage.
