Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the lining life of the converter by lining the inside walls of the charging side and trunnion side in the converter with the non-fired refractory bricks containing the specific amounts of carbon material, powder Al and MgO clinker or further powder Si.
CONSTITUTION: The charging side and trunnion side of the inside walls of the converter which are subjected to heaviest damages are lined with the non-fired refractory bricks which are composed of carbon material; 3W40wt%, Al powder; 1W10wt% and the rest magnesia clinker and are further added, if necessary, with powder Si at 6% or less. In this case, natural graphite, electrode scraps, coke, etc. are used for the carbon material, to which binders such as tar and pitch are compounded. After the mixture is kneaded, it is molded to bricks which are then used for lining in an unburned state to the converter. Al improves the residual carbon content of the carbon material and becomes partly carbides, by the expansion in the volume at which time the texture of the bricks are made dense. The addition of Si further multiplies the characteristic, resulting in the considerably improved fire resistance characteristic.
