Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the run-off of molten slag to a ladle so as to improve the steel quality, by inserting a partition wall, which is formed by filling a cylindrical shell with refractory material and which has a specific density larger than that of the molten slag, into a converter on the surface of the tapping hole before completion of molten steel run-off to form a partition wall around the tapping hole. CONSTITUTION:In tapping of a converter which contains molten steel 2 and molten slag 3, a partition wall 5, which is made by incorporation of cylindrical iron shell or iron vessel 7 and solid refractory material 6 packed in the vessel 7 to form the partition wall 5 having specific gravity larger than that of the molten slag, is inserted sidewards through the top 1 into the converter as it is inclined before the completion of tapping. The partiton wall 5 is positioned around the tapping hole 4 to form the partiton wall 5 which surrounds the tapping hole 4. Hereby the run- off of the molten slag 3 to the ladle is inhibited. When the partiton wall 5 is cylindrical, its preferable inside diameter, outside diameter, and height are (1.2-5)d, (3-10)d, (3-8)d respectively, where d is the diameter of the tapping hole.
