Abstract
PURPOSE: To cheaply manufacture aluminum hydroxide with enhanced solubility in acids by adding a small amt. of fine aluminum hydroxide as a seed to an alkali aluminate soln. contg. alumina dissolved in a supersaturation state.
CONSTITUTION: Aluminum hydroxide obtd. by the Bayer process is dry pulverized to fine powder of 3μ or less in average particle size on the basis of a sedimentation method. This powder is added as a seed to an alkali aluminate soln. contg. alumina dissolved in a supersaturation state in an amt. of 0.1W7wt% as alumina to the amt. of the dissolved alumina. The powder-added soln. is fed to a deposition process of the Bayer process, where aluminum hydroxide is deposited. The mechanism of forming this acid sol. aluminum hydroxide is estimated as follows: since the amt. of the seed added is small, alumina deposited is mainly consumed to form fresh aluminum hydroxide particles owing to uncleus formation, whereby slow growth of crystals does not occur, and the formed particles are rich in cohesion power.
