Abstract

PURPOSE: To avert transmission loss produced at the melt extrusion covering and improve environmental stress crack characteristics by forming the glass fiber for optical transmission through the use of a mixture of two or more kinds of high density polyethylenes as a secondary covering material.
CONSTITUTION: Immediately after spinning of an optical fiber 1, a silicone resin is coated thereon and is then dried, whereby a resin composition layer (primary covering layer) 2 is formed, on which is then provided a thermoplastic resin composition layer (secondary covering layer) 3 by the use of a mixture of two or more kinds of high density polyethylenes of different molecular weights, whereby the glass fiber for optical transmission is obtained. The similar effect may by obtained as well by using the mixture of about several tens % or under of low density polyethylene, in lieu of high density polyethylene of a smaller molecular weight (larger MI), in high density polyethylene of a larger molecular weight (smaller MI).
