Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent grains from deteriorating by oxidation, micro-organisms and pests during storage, by enclosing grains with an oxygen absorbent and inert gas in a bag made of a soft packing material which is treated by vacuum deposition of a metal or a metal oxide.
CONSTITUTION: Grains are enclosed with an oxygen absorbent and inert gas in the bag which is made of a soft material which is treated by vacuum deposition of a metal or a metal oxide. Examples of soft packing materials are thermoplastic resins, such as polyolefins including polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutene, nylon, and polyester, which are treated by the vacuum deposition of a metal, such as Al, Zn or Cu, or a metal oxide, such as silicon dioxide or indium oxide. Examples of inert gases are CO3 gas, N, Ar, He, or a mixture thereof. It is effective to use a desiccant together with the oxygen absorbent for preservation.
