Abstract

PURPOSE: To take a correct measurement of pH without any need to calibrate an electrode by measuring a potential at a specific point where an electrolyzed substance is electrolyzed in a potential-current curve of electrode reaction in which H+ participates, and then by using a checking line showing the relation between this potential and H+ concentration.
CONSTITUTION: For example, balancing electrode voltage E shows pH dependency in terms of oxidation of NO2 - as shown by the formula and then this oxidation is carried out under a condition where a diffused rate determining wave is easily shown, the half-wave potential of an oxidation wave to be observed is 0.36V with pH 8 and 0.24V with pH 10, a hydrogen electrode potential standard. As for a solution having a linear relation between the pH and electrode potential, the half- wave potential of an electrolyzing oxidation wave of ions is found and a temperature correction is made to find the pH of the solution. In this method, the pH measurement becomes possible by using a platinum electrode with a small overvoltage, even as to reaction attended on a relatively-large overvoltage such as general hydrogen generation reaction and oxygen generation reaction.
