Abstract

PURPOSE: A modified Haxo-Sweeny culture medium, in which instead of a soil exudate, potassium nitrate and dipotassium monohydrogen phosphate, a compost exudate, twice amount of sodium nitrate and thrice amount of dipotassium monohydrogen phosphate are used, grows diatoms with higher efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: The Haxo-sweeny culture medium is modified by using a compost exudate instead of soil exudate, twice amount of sodium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate, and thrice amount of dipotassium hydrogen phosphate. Further, activated carbon, vitamin B1 and B12 or substances containing them are added to the modified culture medium and a diatom is inoculated on it. The culture of the diatom is conducted by supplying carbon dioxide with bacterium-free air under the irradiation of artificial or sun light at a level of 20,000 lux for 10W14 days.
