Abstract
PURPOSE: To realize a nondestructive and simplified test for the preform structure by making use of the fact that the moire stripes are capable of a macroscopic magnification of the minute structure in order to analize the moire stripes of the preform and thus to measure the core diameter and the distribution form of the refractive index.
CONSTITUTION: Preform 6 to be tested is held into the matching oil in transparent container 7, and the light beam sent from Na lamp 9 is made to pass through moire grid 1 through lens 10. The light beam then crosses preform 6 from the side surface as shown by segment 11 and then projected on screen 13 via lens 12 after passing through moire grid 2. Container 7 is put on shift stage 14 of Y-Z direction and then shifted along the moire stripes while watching the screen, and shift amount ΔZ is read out through recorder 15. In this case, curve 16 shows the form of the measured moire stripes. The core diameter con be obtained directly from the distance between two peaks of the curve, and furthermore the distribution form and the difference of the refractive index can be calculated by analyzing the form of the curve.
