Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent ignition of a U(NO3)4 or Pu(NO3)4 soln. at high temps. by forming an inert gas atmosphere for a microwave irradiation space when the soln. is irradiated with microwaves to produce dried UO2 or PuO2.
CONSTITUTION: The microwave irradiation space of a heat-denitrating apparatus is formed with container 1, upper and lower driving sections and rotating turn table 3. Raw soln. 5 of U(NO3)4 or Pu(NO3)4 is filled in receiver 7, and receiver 7 is set on table 3. While feeding inert gas into container 1 from pipe 8, soln. 5 is irradiated with microwaves of controlled output from a microwave oscillator through waveguides 4. Steam and gases generated by heating are sucked with an off-gas treating system connected to exhaust gas pipe 6 together with the inert gas. By this method the atmosphere in the heating container becomes filled with the inert gas, NOx, nitric acid and steam, and soln. 5 does not ignite at high temps. Accordingly, formation of a combustion product unsuitable for powder for manufacturing reactor fuel can be prevented.
