Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain modified red phosphorus suitable for use as a flame retardant for synthetic resin by adding a specified copper carboxylate to red phosphorus.
CONSTITUTION: Red phosphorus is mixed with 0.1W5% of a more than divalent copper carboxylate such as copper oxalate or copper tartrate in the form of powder, or a sol. copper salt and a more than divalent carboxylic acid are added to an aq. suspension of red phosphorus to deposit a copper carboxylate on the phosphorus surface. The resulting modified red phosphorus controls formation of phosphin with little lowering of the ignition point, so it is suitable for use as a flame retardant for resin.
