Abstract

PURPOSE: When a polyester from ketene and crotonaldehyde is decomposed, a urea or thioureac compound is added thereto to avoid the formation of colored and resinous substances, thus producing the sorbic acid that can be readily purified and used for food additives.
CONSTITUTION: The decomposition of a polyester from ketene and crotonaldehyde is effected in the presence of 0.4W5.0 wt% of a urea or thiourea compound or their salt, to produce little colored and white sorbic acid.
EFFECT: The difficulties of safety and handling encountered when hydrazine is used is solved and the equipment is protected from corrosion.
