Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare cis-3-hexenol useful as a raw material of perfumes and flavors, by reducing 2-methyl-5,6-dihydropyran which can be easily prepared from inexpensive 1,3-pentadiene and paraformaldehyde, with an alkali metal in an amine.
CONSTITUTION: Cis-3-hexenol is prepared by reducing 2-methyl-5,6-dehydropyran with an alkali metal in an amine. The amine is, e.g. ammonia, lower alkylamines, ethylenediamine, etc., preferably ethylamine, and the alkali metal is, e.g. Li, K and na, preferably Li. 2-Methyl-5,6-dihydropyran is prepared by Diels-Alder reaction of 1,3-pentadiene with paraformaldehyde. Cis-3-hexenol has perfume like fresh green leaves.
