Abstract

PURPOSE: The sulfonation of lower alkylbenzene is conducted using high- concentration fuming sulfuric acid as a sulfonation agent under specific reaction conditions to produce high-purity p-alkylbenzenesulfonic acid useful for intermediates of dyes and phenolic resins.
CONSTITUTION: The two-step sulfonation of a lower alkylbenzene of the formula (R is alkyl) as ethylbenzene is conducted using a fuming sulfuric acid of 30W70 % concentration in the lower temperature range from -50 to 60, preferably from -60 to 50°C at the first step and then the high temperature range from 90 to 200, preferably 100 to 150°C at the second step to produce p-alkylbenzenesulfonic acid of low meta isomer content. The fuming sulfuric acid is preferably added in the all amount until the first-step reaction completes.
EFFECT: The reaction is readily controlled, the operations are simple and no waste acid is produced to eliminate the anxiety of pollution.
