PURPOSE: To provide a side housing and oil seal combination which does not abruptly increase the wear of the lip of the oil seal even when a diffusion layer at the lower layer of the side housing is exposed for a rotary piston engine.
CONSTITUTION: In a rotary piston engine in which a rotor b is disposed via an oil seal 1' and a side seal 9' or the like within a side housing a thereof, an iron-carbon- nitrogen alloy layer is formed on the uppermost surface of the side housing a by softly nitriding the iron material surface, and a diffusion layer is formed under the alloy layer. A hard chrome plated portion 5 is formed on the entire slide surface of the side housing a at the lip 4 of the oil seal 1' in such a manner that the slide surface of the oil seal 1 is so formed that only the portion 5 makes always contact with the side housing a in any worn state. Thus, it can improve the wear resistance and durability of the oil seal.
