Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent melting down of low m.p. alloying elements alone in refining of an alloy by covering the elements with a base metal or other high m.p. alloying elements prior to addn. to the base metal.
CONSTITUTION: Low m.p. metal 2a is covered with base metal 1 or protective layer 5 of other high m.p. metal and put into base metal 1 to make briquette 3. Some briquettes 3 are vertically welded to obtain consumable electrode 4. When an alloy is refined using electrode 4, low m.p. metal 2a alone is not melted down as far as protective layer 5 is not melted.
