Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a graft copolymer having excellent impact strength and weatherability, by a simplified process comprising adding a vinyl monomer which is a poor solvent of a rubber, to a stable latex obtained by the emulsification of a solution of a rubber in an alkenyl aromatic compound.
CONSTITUTION: A solution obtained by dissolving 5W40 parts by weight of a rubber in 60W95 parts by weight of an alkenyl aromatic monomer, is emulsified with water in the presence of a surface active agent. 6W48 Parts by weight of vinyl cyanide monomer which is a poor solvent of the rubber, is added to the latex obtained above, and subjected to the emulsion graft copolymerization using an organic peroxide as a catalyst. The alkenyl aromatic monomer is, e.g. styrene, halogenated styrene, etc., and the rubber is, e.g. ethylene/propylene/non-conjugated-diene terpolymer rubber, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, etc.
