Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance impact resistance, appearance and weather resistance, by the emulsion graft polymerization of an O/W type emulsion with addition of a specified organic peroxide, which is prepared by dissolving in a monomer on ethylenic rubber copolymer having no unsaturated bond in the main chain, and emulsifying the obtained solution into the O/W type emulsion.
CONSTITUTION: An ethylenic rubber copolymer having no unsaturated bond in the main chain (ethylene-propylene-ethylidene-norbornene terpolymer, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, etc.) is dissolved and dispersed in a monomer such as styrene, in the presence of a small amount of a polymerization inhibitor and an aqueous solution of a surfactant, to obtain a homogeneous W/O type emulsion. Then the emulsion is converted into O/W type, by being dispersed again with addition of deionized water. The dispersion is graft-polymerized, at 60W98°C, using an organic peroxide of half-life ≤10hr at 100°C (e.g. one that produces tert-butoxy radical on decomposition, etc.), as a catalyst. Thus it is possible to efficiently obtain said graftpolymer in ane easy manner.
