PURPOSE:To compose a gas alarm device having selectivity to gas and less susceptible to dust or contamination in the air, by converting the change of color of a substance which discolors when coming in contact with gas into an electric signal by means of a photocoupler and displaying an alarm. CONSTITUTION:Ultrafine alumina powder, caustic potash, and suspended solution of pH indicator are deposited on an alumina ceramic substrate measuring about 4 X 4 mm, and dried to form a sensor element. In the sensor chamber shutting off external light, the light from the light source, which is a light emitting diode, is projected to the said sensor element, and the reflected light is received by a silicon photo diode through a filter, and an alarm is issued according to the change in the output thereof. This gas alarm device reacts specifically to carbon dioxide.
