Abstract
PURPOSE: To achieve detection accuracy and stability by reading the reference signals of different phases of a reference track group and the similar signals of a servo track group and using the phase differences thereof as position signals thereby detecting head positions.
CONSTITUTION: Reference signals of different phases having been recorded in reference track of each thack are read by a stationary reference head group 31 and the reference signal of a desired track is applied to a peak detection circuit 33 via selection circuit 32. On the other hand, the same signals as the reference signals having been recorded in the respective servo trakcs are read with a moving head 21 via actuator 52 and the peak values thereof are detected with a peak detection circuit 23. From these peak detection signals, a phase difference detection circuit 41 detects the phase difference corresponding to the position deviation of both read signals, thus the positioning of write-and read heads moving together with the head 21 is accomplished stably and highly accurately by phase comparison without by unstable amplitude comparison.
