Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain monochloroacetic acid efficiently, by reducing dichloroacetic acid, using an electrolytic cell having a fluorine-containing cation exchange membrane under specific electrolysis conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Monochloroacetic acid is obtained by electrolytic reduction of (A) an aqueous solution having a specific conductivity ≥ 0.01 Ω-1.cm-1, comprising dichloroacetic acid and hydrochloric and/or sulfuric acids as a catholyte, using an aqueous mineral acid as an anolyte, with an electrolytic cell comprising (a) a fluorine-containing cation exchange membrane having sufonic acid groups alone or sulfonamido groups or their salts, with an exchange capacity calculated as an equivalent weight of 500W1,800, or carboxylic acid groups with an exchange capacity of 500W1,000, (b) the anode, and (c) the cathode consisting of lead or its alloy. The change of current density according to the dichloroacetic acid concentration in the electrolyte can provide the objective compound in a high yield.
USE: A raw material and intermediate for sizes, pesticides, medicines, perfumes, chelating agents, surfactants, etc.
