Continuous data is compressed (8) and then recorded on magnetic tape 4 via writing circuit 2, and the non-continuous data is recorded on the tape with no compression. At the same time, the data of tape 4 is read out to be sent to decision circuit 9. And in the case of the continuous data, the compressed data is restored to the original continuous data via restoring circuit 10 to be supplied to unit 1; while the non-continuous data is supplied to unit 1 via circuit 9 respectively. As a result, the memory capacity of tape 4 can be increased.
