Abstract

PURPOSE:To rapidly attenuate the vibrations produced in carriage by filling magnetic fluids in the clearance between the carriage provided with heads and the fixing part. CONSTITUTION:A carriage 11 which is provided with heads 1... is supported by rolling bearings 3... and is moved in tracking positions along a stationary guide rail 13 by way of an actuator. Magnetic fluids 15, 15 which are prevented from flowing to the outside of the clearance by being attracted by permanent magnets 14, 14 buried in the rail 13 are filled in the narrow clearance between the top surface of the rail 13 and the opposing surface of the carriage 11. Hence, if the gravity during travel causes a change in the clearance between the carriage 11 and rail 13, the fluids 15, 15 are forced out or drawn in and this produces squeeze-out effect owing to viscosity, giving the attenuation force corresponding to the clearance changing speed to the carriage 11 and letting the vibrations attenuate rapidly. As a result, rapid and sure head tracking is effected.
