Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce a manufacturing cost and improve resin powder properties, by using a mixture of a water-soluble solvent and water as a monomer polymerization solvent, and by reusing a distilled fraction of the solvent-water mixture obtained from the polymerization solvent from which the resin powder is removed.
CONSTITUTION: Solution polymerization of monomers having an ethylenic bond is carried out to give a water-insoluble resin having a softening point of about 5- 150°C. The solvent is an azeotropic mixture of water and a water-soluble solvent having solubility in water not less than 10 wt.%(at 20°C) and a boiling point below 120°C or a mixture (preferably solvent concentration is ≥ 60 wt.%) whose composition is close to that of the azeotropic mixture. A 30-80 wt.% resin solution is, after viscosity adjustment, emulsified in water in an amount of 5-40 times that of the solvent to extract the solvent from the solution, transfer it to the water and form an agueous suspension of the rsin powder having an average particle diameter of a primary particle of 10-200μ. The resin powder is separated from the water- solvent mixture to give a water-containing resin powder with a solid content of 40-90 wt.%
