Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the life of electrode of discharge lamp, by making the arc receiving portion at the top of anode made of tungsten or its alloy with large crystal grains of sizes within a particular range, and thereby preventing darkening of bulb, disconnection of arc and lowering of brightness.
CONSTITUTION: In a discharge lamp having cathode 2 and anode 3 sealed in its bulb 1, arc receiving portion 3a at the top of said anode 3 made of tungsten or tungsten alloy is made with material having large grain sizes (less than 100 grains/ mm2). Such large cerystal grains can be obtained by heating an electrode material shaped by way of forging or machining, to higher than 2000 C (preferably, to 2200 W2350°C) under the vacuum of about 10-4W10-5 torr. In accordance with the above method, it is enabled to minimize the grain boundaries and thus to prevent disconnection of arc and lowering of brightness due to surface roughening. At the same time, darkening of bulb 1 can be also prevented that is possibly caused at the time of evacuating gas in the bulb 1 or when the lamp is used long
