Abstract
PURPOSE:To activate the catalyst with a simple treatment, to use it for a long period of time and to reduce and remove cheaply the abovementioned NOX, by using the material obtained by generating a specified amount of the iron rust of a specified heating loss, consisting of gamma-FeO2H, alpha-FeO2H, etc. as the main components, by repeating the desiccation and humidification without heating on the surface of iron substrate, as the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:By exposing the iron substrate outdoors and repeating the desiccation and humidification at the normal temperature, the iron rust consisting of hydrated iron oxides such as gamma-FeO2H, alpha-FeO2, etc. as the main components and showing the heating loss to 150-300 deg.C more than 7%, is generated in an amount more than 10mg/cm<2> for the surface area of the iron substrate and is used as the catalyst. By contacting the exhaust gas to the catalyst after NH3 has been added to the above gas, NOX in the exhaust gas is reduced to N2 and is removed. The above catalyst can be prepared easily and cheaply by exposing the iron substrate outdoors or by passing air through the inside of the reactor made of steel and spraying water or a dilute aqueous solution of sulfuric acid intermittently. Besides, when the activity has lowered, after a part or the whole of rust has been removed, the catalyst is regenerated by repeating the desiccation and hymidification and is used several times as the catalyst until the iron substrate collapses.
