Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a large amount of coriolin useful as carcinostatics and antibacterials, by oxidizing a dihydrocoriolin prepared from its derivative through a protected derivative of naturally occurring coriolin B in large quantities.
CONSTITUTION: Coriolin B is reacted with 2,3-dihydropyran in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. p-toluene sulfonic acid, to form a coriolin B derivative of formula I: (R is hydroxyl-protecting group), which is then reacted with an alkali, e.g. sodium methoxide, to give a dihydrocoriolin derivative of formula II. The hydroxyl- protecting groups are removed from the derivative of formula II, and oxidized by an oxidizing agent in a solvent, e.g. benzene, to afford the objective compound of formula III. Dimethyl sulfoxide, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide etc. may be used as the oxidizing agent.
