Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce diffracted light by the liquid crystal layer acting as a phase diffraction grating efficiently and improve light utilization rate by specifying each width of grating form electrodes in the liquid crystal light valve of a schlieren lens optical system.

CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal layer 12 having dielectric anisotropy and refractive index anisotropy is interposed between a transparent substrate 8 deposited with a transparent substrate 8 deposited with a trasparent electrode 9 over the entire part of the surface and a transparent substrate 11 deposited with grating form transparent electrodes 10 having a fixed space period and a width of 0.3 to 0.7 times thereof. When in this liquid crystal light valve 4 the voltage above its threshold value is not applied to the layer 12, the light passed through an input slit 2, schlieren lens 3 and valve 4 from a light source 1 is projected to the non-transparent portions of an output shield bar 6 by the shlieren lens 5 and the light thereof does not reach a screen 7. When the voltage above the threshold value is applied periodically to the layer 12 forms a phase diffraction grating and the light leaks from the diffraction bar 6 and images on the screen 7.
